Pro.G.Brix 14-18

Designing a cultivation protocol that allows the production of watermelon with a guaranteed Brix level of 14-18

Measure 16 “Cooperation” Sub-measure 16.2 - “Support for pilot projects and the development of new products, practices, processes and technologies”

Introduction to the project

The Brix degree indicates the quantity of sugar contained in fruit and vegetables: the higher the degree, the higher the vitamin content, shelf life and dry weight.

The Brix degree score is used as a quality index as it is directly proportional to the sweetness of the fruit and therefore to its organoleptic pleasantness. The sugar content is a quality parameter that influences the commercial value of the agricultural product.

In recent years, the agricultural sector in the Agro Pontino has invested heavily in specialization, focusing on particular crops such as watermelon, which is widely distributed on both the national and international markets.

In today's fruit and vegetable panorama, there is an ever-increasing awareness and attention to the health and organoleptic characteristics of the products that consumers bring to the table, in addition to attention to climate change and environmental issues that each of us is now experiencing first-hand.

For fruit and vegetable producers, achieving high quality levels therefore becomes a fundamental requirement.
